CONCEPT
Insight
Each individual has a unique relationship with their mental illness and functions at a higher or lower level based on their level of comfort away from the center of their bipolar.
Challenge
Even with a support system, it’s difficult to have a grip on defying moods. Minimizing and managing symptoms relies heavily on the consistency & accountability of an already vulnerable individual.
Hypothesis
Bringing forward context linked to user's moods provides new awareness of their mental health around-the-clock that can lead to better, healthier outcomes in day-to-day wellness, self-care, communication, transition in recovery & professional treatment.
Solution
Create a mobile app to foster self-management with the support of passive mood tracking to present a holistic view of user's shared thoughts, activity, emotion, body & environment.
Assisted by wearable technology, the app visualizes mood and provides an emotional, physical & contextual tracking experience.
betr encourages and allows users to journal co-occurring thoughts and behaviors daily in effort to learn from themselves and take positive, informed steps to improve the quality of their everyday life.

CORE PRODUCT FEATURES
USER RESEARCH
Understanding
Vital Human Factors
If you have a mood disorder, your general emotional state is distorted or inconsistent with your circumstances.
• Each person produces biosignals
• Careful analysis can reveal emotion
• Biosignals are unique to the individual
Target Audience
Active women and men with a history of mood instability and/or personality irregularities.
Narrowing in Places of Need
An advanced look at body & mind for clarity and assistance.
The unusual shifts of bipolar vary in periods of severe high and low moods which differ from common ups-and-downs and interfere with your ability to function.
High, manic episodes can lead to excessive energy and risky behavior, while low episodes of depression can lead to lack of interest in hobby's and feelings of hopefulness and worthlessness.
Through research and speaking with mental health practitioners, I worked to narrow in on how mood-tracking and journaling can help users with mood disorders gain strength and awareness helpful to their day-to-day wellness.
WORKFLOW
SKETCHES
Sketching for Mental Health
Journaling adds to a life map that helps organize day-to-day life for self-reflection and insights useful in treatment.
Health and moods are personal, the app respects user's privacy and personal moments without trying or seeming to replace the need for help from doctors and psychologists.
I intended to design a hospitable experience complementary to professional treatment.
WIREFRAMES
COLOR THEORY + MOODBOARD
Visualizing Mood
Emotion is the force of life and all colors associate with certain feelings and states.
I used warm, contrasting colors to depict a mood spectrum that embodies and evokes the state of user's emotions.
Direction
bright • curious • reflective • uplifting
Through understanding, I produced a friendly, supportive & light visual design to provide comfort, positivity & encourage routine.
